Quarantine after one long day of travel to China

Boarding the flight required filling out a China customs app and showing our green health code which made us eligible to fly. We showed them often…. The hardest part of the flight was keeping a mask on for 24 hours. We could take it off to eat and drink but not for long. The key is to change masks often for comfort. There were empty seats so the crew was nice in letting us move for more space. The food was good and I was able to get vegetarian. Add there was wine…. And I was able to lay down across seats to sleep. I appreciate it now that I’m 57 and my legs swell when I sit for so long even with compression socks.

It took 14 hours to get from Dallas to Seoul. It took a little longer than normal as the Russia-Ukraine war has changed the flight patterns to avoid Russian air space. As China covid rules even apply to flight crew, many US crews cannot enter China without giving up weeks for quarantine. We stopped in Seoul only to change crews and we were not allowed off the plane. Three hours later we landed in Shanghai.

The first thing we saw at the gate were the quarantine personnel waiting to deplane everyone aboard. We grabbed our carry-on and walked out the gate.

I have to give the Chinese credit for organization and mobilization. International flights arrive in an area separate from the rest of the airport. It was a long walk which was welcome after being seated for so long. We walked through temperature scanners, people checking passports and assigning a bar code for us to be scanned throughout the process, COVID test (both throat and nose), checking passports and customs codes again…. After getting our checked bags we were then placed in holding areas based upon where we live in China. This makes it easier to move people to the next steps. We also made sure all of us were in the same bus to go to the same quarantine facility.

Following a worker in the final step at the airport to a bus that will take us to the quarantine facility.
Buses lined up to take passengers to quarantine.

It is one thing to self-quarantine and another to be part of centralized quarantine. To self quarantine you may still go get supplies and live with those in a household. Centralized quarantine means behind a door in a small room with meals brought to you, twice daily temperature checks, and COVID testing every three days. You cannot leave the room.

More paperwork and paying 4200 rmb ($662.51) for the 2 week stay and then I was taken to my room. All luggage was sprayed with a bleach solution even though it has been shown you don’t get COVID from objects. This is the Songzhi apartment hotel that used to house workers for the Songz automobile air conditioning company. Bare basic accommodations….

Some basic supplies in the room. Toiletries, laundry detergent, TP, bleach tablets for the bathroom…

Very. small. room. The wide angle shot makes it look bigger. To be able to have space to workout I pushed the bed against the wall. The bed is pieces of wood slats for a foundation and a mattress less than an inch thick. I folded it and the comforter to lay on. I have a run but warm blanket I take with me on airplanes Good thing I don’t roll much at night as I’m sleeping on an area the size of a sleeping bag.

That white chair is the only seating in the room besides the bed. The bar area is the only place to eat and work.

I unpacked necessities and made a little coffee bar. I have the mug I bought from Jess Greene, an amazing artist. I also have the other mug I won in the Resolution run race when I ran with Michele Belak. The kettle came with the room. I planned to make sure I have my coffee.

We can get some deliveries but cannot order meals from outside. I did bring some oatmeal and almonds for snacks.

The hallways are also sanitized with bleach several times a day. Trash can be set out at different times of the day for collection.

Food overall is pretty good. Even if it is not vegetarian there are so many veggies I can skip the meat. It is amazing how hungry you become when you hear the cart roll down the hall.

Starting the next morning after we arrived we were still teaching online which helped the days go by. It is definitely a relief to not have to teach in the middle of the night.

The weekends will be the hardest when there is nothing to break up the time. I have workouts and stretches planned throughout. I also saved books to read and computer files to sort. Wifi is pretty decent except at night. My school sent a couple different extra wifi options which help. In four days I have watched the Loki and Hawkeye avenger series… I also have West Side Story on my laptop but if I watch it anymore I will break out into song as I watch!

My school created a wechat group with support people from the school. Part of their job is to be available with translation help including the apps we need to go from Shanghai to Guangzhou. They were able to help us get supplies we need and even talk to my health office so I can do my third week of quarantine in my apartment!

Over half the people in this chat are support people
They even sent this card to keep track of quarantine days with a stamp of a ram, the school mascot.

I also brought this diffuser Becca gave me that I had not yet taken back to China. With some Patchouli oil, it helps to humidify and scent the air.

Now to keep to a schedule I drafted to make it through the days. I must confess that there are days I wonder why I came back. I almost made the decision to leave China this year. But, I still have a few places yet to visit here and it is a place I have always wanted to be. My school paid a nice bonus to stay and I have another year in a leadership position I would like to finish. The whole process is testing my resolve and this is a fluid situation.

If there is anything we have learned from the pandemic is that things change often and we will adapt. I can come home again in December but I may postpone it until Summer 2023. After all, I stayed longer this time than what was planned. I am also looking at where I would like to be next in the world…

The happiest place on Earth

Disney. More specifically, Shanghai Disney.

I went to visit my friend Cat and her son Rowan in Shanghai. I debated going knowing that the cases they just had of covid had been cleared. In fact China had 900 cases pop up over the whole country and within a month had them down to no new cases. As stringent as it is, the extensive contract tracing, quarantine of those in high risk areas, and massive testing works. Now if more were vaccinated, we might not have to do this quite so much….

So on Thanksgiving day we had a full day of professional development followed by a Thanksgiving dinner and celebration and I left directly to the airport for my flight. I arrived late and the next morning we were going to Disney.

There is even a toy story hotel.

What is funny about this Disney is that there are more adults than children and the adults are dressed up in Disney attire.

Main street.

The 5th anniversary of Disney Shanghai.

Some interesting sculptures in the park. It had been a long time since I’ve been to Disney.

The soaring over the horizon ride was pretty amazing. It was as if you are parasailing over the areas but you can actually smell what it would be. The African savannah smelled of earth, India had a rose petal smell, the smell of the ocean, spray of water…..

Pirates of the Caribbean was also great. It was weird hearing the characters speak Chinese.

Who could resist a chestnut waffle. Yum.

Tron was a pretty amazing ride. You were on these bikes and the ride not only was inside but out as well.

After eating the waffle we were actually too full. We don’t usually find good waffles here in China so that is a once in awhile treat. We walked around Alice’s garden to work it off.

The lake.

Then it was off to marvel studios.

I took my mask off for a minute to take this picture. I was told to get the mask back on…

And there is this picture with the wasp… Socially distanced of course… So I can take off my mask.

We picked up cheesecake from the cheesecake factory and after getting back to my friends house received word that another friend who was visiting Shanghai could not leave to go back to Guangzhou without a negative covid test. It turned out this morning there are three cases in Shanghai over 45 minutes away from where I am staying. Within hours 182 close cases to the 3 friends are in quarantine, the buildings are locked down, and 55,278 people were tested. I went and received a covid test as I cannot fly back without one ( many people from my school are here). I’m going to try to get an earlier flight. Once back home I will have to report to the community health office and whatever other requirements they ask for I will have to do. As I was not in one of the areas I should only have to take 2 more covid tests in 72 hours after returning… I hope that is all. My district is strict…..

Shanghai Disney town

In the morning I ran with Ollie the golden retriever. Fun! He finds all the cat hiding places!

We then went to Disney town. Not Shanghai Disney. Even though it was warmer that day, it was still nippy to be on fast rides. Disney town is within sight of actual Disney but with shops and restaurants.

It was nice to outside peruse the Disney store.

I hadn’t been paying attention to the intricate Lego sets and they were impressive. There were a few large Lego decorations.

We strolled some more. Lastly we went to eat at the cheesecake factory.

We don’t have a cheesecake factory in Guangzhou and no telling when I will be somewhere where there is one. I had the guacamole salad and we shared sweet potato fries. I took key lime cheesecake to have later.

Xinchang ancient town, Christmas Eve

In the morning of the 24th we strolled the lanes, carved stone-arch bridges and old wooden buildings. They have the conserved courtyard-style architecture reminiscent of the Ming and Qing dynasties. This is a glimpse of a time when Pudong was actually a string of individual villages similar to this one.

We sampled foods including glutinous rice balls, bean cakes, warm chestnuts, and others.

We stopped at a great coffee house and had dirty coffee which was more steamed milk and dusted with chocolate. The cutest dog played fetch the whole time we were there.

We also did a lot of shopping. Beautiful antiques, jade, stone, and antiques were everywhere. Afterwards we cooked vegetarian chili, rice pudding, and snacks. My friends Tricia and Dan came to Cat’s for dinner and they brought me a stollen bread they found in Shanghai. It is a Christmas tradition and so happy to have it this year. I have some really great friends.

Shanghai and the French concession

After helping Cat with grocery shopping for the holiday meals I took a Didi into the city to meet my friend Tricia and Dan at the Grand Hyatt. I splurged on a massage then meet them for tea in a lounge.

View from the massage room.

While they were getting ready for dinner I went to the adjoining building to view the city on the observatory tower. Beautiful lights.

Dinner was in the French concession at Pollux. The French concession was an area of Shanghai under foreign control from the 1800’s until about 1943 when it was signed over to Japanese control. Since then it has retained its european flavor and is a popular tourist destination

It is a well rated restaurant. My dinner consisted of charred cauliflower (pureed cauliflower topped with a cauliflower steak with a parmesan crisp on top. Yum!), Salmon with bernaise sauce, and creme brulee.

There are beautiful markets, music venues, and restaurants here. It was lovely to walk around and take in the sights and sounds.

Shanghai flower market

Before leaving Guangzhou I had breakfast with Elaine and Killian. Our routine Monday night dinner would not happen due to travel so was nice to see them before I left. From there I walked with them too the metro to go to the airport.

After arriving in Shanghai, a driver picked me up to take me to my friend Cat and her son Rowan. They are fabulous people, so warm and welcoming. Rowan and I have hiked together and I have to say he is the coolest 14 year old I’ve encountered in a long time. A testament to his mom and his personality. They also have two dogs. This will be a fun few days!!!!!!

We went to the flower market where I could get my fill of Christmas decorations. It was nice window shopping and having fun with the two of them.

In China you are always on the lookout for mislabeled products. This one that Rowan found led to serious laughter. If the stickers were on that theme I would have bought it!

Lunch was amazing. Portobello mushroom soup, super food salad, and a trio of desserts we shared because we couldn’t decide. Date sticky pudding, chocolate pecan pie, and run raisin cheesecake. All delicious.

Mall shopping. We saw this cake store where the cakes are 1000 rmb. That is about 150 USD.

Outside the mall.

It is cute the reindeer bring each other decorations, but Christmas balls hanging from the butt….

This was outside the entrance to a store that has novelties from a movie called Spirited away.

We didn’t go into this building, but it looks like my kind of place….

Later I had to go to the travel office to get my covid test to travel to Harbin. They made it so easy. 5 minutes and I was on my way. We registered in advance and they take care of everything. Afterwards we walked around the neighborhood as Cat had never been there yet.

The next morning I took their golden retriever Ollie in a jog around. It is colder in Shanghai much like Virginia weather. Of course my nose is running constantly and another reason I don’t want to be in colder weather. I have not seen frost in over three years.
